Program Description

Through funding from Portland Parks and Recreation and She Flies, coaches who elect their interest may be able to receive a stipend of $200 to help offset personal costs incurred with coaching such as transportation and childcare.

We know that Girls on the Run is a more inclusive and impactful experience when coaches mirror the participants. To ensure we best represent the communities we serve, BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ individuals, people from low-income communities, and those with disabilities are encouraged to apply to coach. To do so, apply via ourcoach application

One week prior to the start of the season, stipends will be offered in a phased approach to accepted and placed head and assistant coaches until all available funds have been allocated.

Phase 1, Monday 3/11/24: All head and assistant coaches placed with teams at schools where 70% or more of students qualify for free and reduced lunch (or at parks located in a zip code primarily serviced by a school where 70% or more or students qualify for free and reduced lunch) will receive an email with a link to request a stipend. Stipends will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis in order of request made. Not sure if your neighborhood team qualifies for phase 1? Contact programs@girslontherunpdx.org to ask us.

Phase 2, Tuesday 3/12/24: If funds remain available, head and assistant coaches placed at all other sites will receive an email with a link to request a stipend and any remaining funds will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis in order of request made. Coaches selected for a stipend will need to provide a W-4 and mailing address to Girls on the Run Greater Oregon. Stipends will be issued via check within the first four weeks of the season.

This project is made possible by funding from the City of Portland through Portland Parks & Recreation’s Community Partnership Program and Sport Oregon’s She Flies grant program. As we continue to pilot this coaches stipend program, we are striving for an accessible and equitable model that reduces barriers to coaching for individuals from within the diverse communities served by Girls on the Run programs. Your feedback on the coaches stipend program and application process is welcome and valuable. We hope to expand this opportunity in future seasons.
